HealthX Africa

Background of the company

HealthX Africa is a Kenyan digital health company that provides telemedicine solutions for chronic disease care through a hybrid public-private model.

The gap that the company is addressing

Kenya’s complex public health system and geographical barriers limit access to affordable, quality chronic disease care.

The reach and/or impact of the healthtech solution

HealthX managed 2,363 chronic disease patients, facilitated over 10,000 consultations, worked with 157 healthcare facilities, trained 85 clinical officers, raised $1,000,000 in funding, and integrated into 3 public health facilities.

The healthtech solution and how it was implemented

HealthX expanded its telemedicine platform to level 4 and 5 hospitals, training healthcare providers to deliver client-centered virtual care. The company collaborated with county governments and private partners such as Starlink, aligning its efforts with Kenya’s Digital Health Strategy. Stakeholders included county governors, healthcare workers, and community representatives. Through these partnerships and integration into public health systems, HealthX Africa directly supports the government’s objective of expanding equitable, technology-enabled access to care under the national digital health agenda.

Lessons learned from the experience

HealthX demonstrated the effectiveness of public-private partnerships and user-centered design in scaling digital health. However, regulatory complexity and infrastructure gaps, such as downtime in the Kenya Health Information System, limited interoperability. The company’s success underscores the importance of flexible financing, evidence generation, and proactive government collaboration.
