Aurora Health Systems
Background of the company
The gap that the company is addressing
Fragmented CKD data systems and limited interoperability hinder coordinated care and increase costs for patients and providers.
The reach and/or impact of the healthtech solution
Aurora reached 400,000 patients, 2,000 providers, and 200 health facilities, forming 6 public and 6 private partnerships, raising $100,000, and integrating into 32 public facilities. The platform informed National Health Insurance Fund reimbursement models and supported provider training.
The healthtech solution and how it was implemented
Aurora developed a digitized CKD data collection tool integrated with national health information systems through partnerships with the Kenya Ministry of Health, the Kenya Renal Association, and Qualcomm. Stakeholders, including healthcare workers, patients, and policymakers, actively contributed to the tool’s design and testing. By digitizing CKD data, strengthening interoperability, and informing NHIF reimbursement models, Aurora Health Systems directly supports Kenya’s Digital Health Strategy and the NCD Strategic Plan (2021–2025), aligning with national priorities for chronic disease management and health financing.
Lessons learned from the experience
Aurora’s work showed how data-driven evidence generation and government engagement enhance sustainability. However, unclear reimbursement models and slow funding disbursement underscored the need for clearer policies and faster public-sector collaboration.
