Accelerating Action for Healthtech Integration in Africa

Overview
The HealthTech Hub Africa (HTHA) has been at the forefront of shaping transformative dialogues to advance healthtech innovations across African public health systems. Building on the successes of the Dakar Blueprint Summit (2023), which led to the conceptualization of the HTHA Policy Blueprint, and the Kigali Healthtech Policy Summit (2024), where the Intergovernmental Working Group (IWG) was launched, the Policy Blueprint was reviewed and endorsed, and country self-assessments were conducted, the upcoming third HealthTech Policy Summit in Ethiopia aims to translate accelerate action for healthtech integration in Africa.
This summit will promote practical, action-oriented approaches to the integration of healthtech solutions, directly addressing policy gaps and capacity needs, with the goal of further strengthening African public health systems.
Objectives
- To strengthen regional collaboration by introducing the HTHA Intergovernmental Working Group (IWG) to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and identifying possible areas of collaboration.
- To present countries’ progress in implementing their national priorities areas aligned to the HTHA Policy Blueprint thematic areas.
- To enhance government capacity in standards and interoperability through targeted needs assessment and a capacity-building session led by HELINA.
- To showcase practical healthtech applications in public health systems, highlighting innovative methods currently being implemented in Kenya amidst policy challenges.
- To demonstrate Ethiopia’s Innovation Lab as a model for homegrown solutions, emphasizing the country’s process of ideation, prototyping, and scaling.
- To deliver tailored masterclasses for the HTHA 2025 cohort, informed by capacity needs assessment.
Outcomes
- A formal collaboration between the IWG and Africa CDC to identify and advance the harmonization of healthtech policies across Africa.
- Government capacity in standards and interoperability is strengthened through a targeted capacity-building session led by HELINA, informed by the results of the needs assessment.
- Documented case study presented by the County Government of Muranga’ Kenya of practical healthtech applications, with actionable recommendations to address policy gaps.
- Positioning Ethiopia’s Innovation Lab as a scalable model for homegrown healthtech innovation across Africa.
- Strengthened capacity of the HTHA 2025 cohort through targeted masterclasses, promoting demand-driven innovations.
Participants
The summit will convene representatives from at least 20 African countries, including government officials from Ministries of Health, Ministries of Information and Technology, and the Africa CDC. The HTHA 2025 cohort will participate in hybrid masterclasses, ensuring inclusiveness.
