Nigeria’s public health system is strained by limited access to specialists, fragmented care coordination, and inadequate patient engagement. These barriers prevent early detection, continuity of care, and efficient management of chronic diseases.

Helium Health reached 2,747 patients, 206 healthcare providers, and 51 facilities, establishing 10 public and 8 private partnerships. It raised $322,042 in additional funding, created 39 new jobs, and increased patient onboarding by 346.2% post-implementation.

Helium Health developed HeliumDoc AI, a patient-centered engagement platform evolved from a simple booking app into a comprehensive solution integrating artificial intelligence and algorithms for early detection of HIV, TB, and diabetes, particularly among youth in Delta State.
Implementation involved collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Health, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, and other partners to align with national public health priorities. Stakeholder engagement included healthcare providers and patients, whose feedback informed system improvements. The company worked closely with the State and Federal Ministries of Health to secure ethical approvals and aligns with government priorities for chronic disease management. This work directly supports Nigeria’s national strategic objectives for digital health transformation and chronic disease prevention.

The company’s experience highlighted how government collaboration accelerates adoption but also revealed barriers such as bureaucratic delays and frequent administrative changes that disrupt project timelines. Helium Health demonstrated that proactive engagement, regulatory alignment, and evidence-driven design are crucial to achieving scalability and sustainability within public systems.
